 "ORBITAL SKYDIVING"

The original opening to the movie was not just the simply champagne bottle tumbling through space as seen in the theatrical release. Originally, the bottle would have been inter-cut with shots of Chekov and Scotty looking for something in the sky. As the scene progresses, we learn that they are looking for Captain Kirk who is orbital skydiving. When he lands, Chekov reminds him that the three of them are scheduled to attend the christening ceremony for the Enterprise-B the day after, to which Kirk replies, he's not attending. The champagne bottle smashes against the ship and the movie progresses as normal with all three in attendance. This scene is also available on the Special Edition DVD.

 "NO SIGN OF HIM"

After Chekov, Scotty and Harriman visit the remains of deck 15, they return to the bridge where Demora Sulu reports that a complete scan of the ship and the surrounding area cannot find Kirk. Chekov sobs to Scotty that he never expected it [Kirk's life] to end like this to which Scotty replies "all things must end." Harriman breaks the silence by ordering the ship home. Interesting to note about this scene is that the sound of the Enterprise-D bridge can be heard in the background.

 "UNCOVERING LURSA AND B'ETOR"

Following Soran's order for the Klingons to go to the Veredian system, a Klingon brings an unconscious Geordi to the bridge and drops him to the deck. Soran says he needs some answers from him. Meanwhile, Worf tells Riker that the Bird of Prey belongs to the Duras sisters. In sick-bay, Beverly attempts to diagnose Data's malfunction. Data claims that he feels concerned over what happened to Geordi and hopes they get him back. The scene flows into Beverly explaining Soran to Riker and Worf which is seen in the theatrical release. What's interesting about this scene is that Geordi is wearing the aborted uniform design in place of the regular uniform.

 "GEORDI TORTURE, PART I"

The infamous torture scene between Geordi and Dr. Soran. In this first part, Geordi begins to explain trilithium as Dr. Soran had asked, but Soran replies he doesn't want a science lecture, rather, he wants to know why Geordi was looking for it on the observatory. Picard happily laughs and replies "Yes, it's a sextant." Inquiring where they obtained it, they reply "it's a secret." Picard declares that makes it a doubly-special gift. This scene is also available on the Special Edition DVD.

 "NOTHING HERE MATTERS"

An alternate take of the Picard-Kirk horseback scene. Kirk compares the Nexus to orbital skydiving; exciting for the first few minutes but not really accomplishing anything. Picard claims that "you needn't be on the bridge of a starship to make a difference" and his request to "come back with me" is also said with more gusto than in the theatrical version. Kirk also adds that what Spock would say if he were present is right, but decides to go with Picard anyway.

 "ALTERNATE ENDING, PART I"

The infamous alternate ending to the movie. On the bridge, Kirk rushes Soran and knocks his weapon away. They begin to fight as Picard makes way for the launcher. He begins imputting random commands as Kirk and Soran continue to struggle.

As Kirk quips "the 24th century isn't so tough" Soran shoots Kirk squarely in the back.

Soran desperately tries to jump into the Nexus Ribbon, but ultimately fails. As Picard tends to Kirk, Soran angrily rushes them. Picard grabs Soran's small phaser and blasts him in the chest. Ultimately defeated, the doctor falls to his death. As Picard looks down at Kirk, he dies without saying a word.

YOUTUBE
 "SHUTTLE PICK-UP"

After burying Kirk on the mountain, Picard observes a shuttlecraft approaching him. Geordi and Worf exit from it as Picard explains that Dr. Soran is no longer a worry. As the crew rummage through the remains of the ship, Beverly makes note of the 232 patients she's had in the last two days. She also wonders if she should hold onto a spare stretcher, just in case she needs a ride. All of these alternate ending scenes are available on the Special Edition DVD.

YOUTUBE
 "ALTERNATE ENDING II"

Another version of the alternate ending which has a rough cut of music not featured in the final movie. The most notable difference is the addition of some final words between Picard and Kirk. Picard claims he'll find some way to contact to the Enterprise and reassures Kirk that he'll be alright. Kirk wonders if they made a difference to which Picard replies they did and thanks him for his efforts. Kirk responds by saying it's the least he could do for the captain of the Enterprise and finally dies. Picard then proceeds to bury him on the mountain and says a silent prayer.
